About This Word Counter & Readability Tool

This free word counter tool instantly analyzes your text as you type. It counts words, characters (with and without spaces), sentences, paragraphs, and syllables. It also calculates estimated reading time (at an average pace of 200 words per minute) and speaking time (at 130 words per minute).

What is Flesch-Kincaid Readability?

The Flesch-Kincaid formulas are widely used readability tests designed to indicate how easy or difficult a piece of English text is to understand. There are two scores:

  • Flesch Reading Ease scores your text on a scale from 0 to 100. Higher scores mean the text is easier to read. Most business writing should aim for 60-70 (plain English).
  • Flesch-Kincaid Grade Level converts the readability score into a US school grade level, indicating the minimum education level needed to easily understand the text.

How Are the Scores Calculated?

The Flesch Reading Ease formula is: 206.835 - 1.015 x (words / sentences) - 84.6 x (syllables / words). The Grade Level formula is: 0.39 x (words / sentences) + 11.8 x (syllables / words) - 15.59. Syllable counts use a vowel-group heuristic that works well for most English text.
